grow your own veg

Post by jeffhaskeft »

what with increasing price of food (and everything else) have any of you decided to try and grow your own veg and fruit?

there have been many programs on tv and the radio about this subject lately, about how your 'ordinary joe' has dipped his/her toe into the gardening world

i myself have 'sown' some seeds and i'm hoping to reap the rewards

I was watching Hugh Fearnly Whittingshaws programme recently.Apparently there is a little known law that if a group of families get together and approach the council the council must provide them with derelict land to grow food.On the TV show there's about 15 people. The land was overgrown but they knuckled down and now have it as a small holding. The land is free too.

I grow my own !grin!

Got a herb garden in the front garden with mint, chives, parsley, thyme, sage, rosemary, oregano and lavender.

And in the back garden I've got loadsa strawberry plants, cherry, plum, sunblush and normal tomatoes, squashes and chillies.

My family all grow their own veg so I guess it just passed on to me. Wanting to get a proper vegetable garden going in the next year tho.

Always really rewarding going outside and bringing in food to eat that you have grown yourself. Had my first strawberry from my plants yesterday. IT WAS GREAT!!!!!!!

Geek never looked so good!

I would literally have to starve before I could be bothered to grow vegetables - I just couldn't be bothered. Seeing I just got a 1kg bag of baby new potatoes for ?1 at Morrisons, the point seems a long way off - they'd have to go up to ?4.99 to get me turning a trowel.

I am lucky that I had a small allotment in my garden when we moved in, the previous were into grow-yer-own and had the usual water butts and 2 massive organic compost bins, so I cleared all the weeds etc and the following year, grew my own, and to keep it simple, stuck with Maris Piper potatoes, Cherry Tomatoes and Runner Beans.
LOTS of thinning out weeds and constant watering made it a right ball-ache and at times, I just couldn't be arsed, but I stuck at it.
Result was fantastic veg, absolutely lovely, but the work involved didn't balance out and it was my one and only foray into grow-me-own. Last year I didn't bother which was a crying shame given the location with sun on it, so to make the most of it, for the last 3 months, I have dug it all up and laid foundations for a patio, measuring 16 x 12 which will look nice, but part of me says, 'what a waste of a prime spot'
I still have plum, cherry and pear trees to keep me going, and I loved the potatoes so much, am tempted to grow some on those plastic tubs to minimise the on-going work needed to make them grow.
Stick at it, I only wish I did, but as other posters have stressed, its an on-going job.

The West London of my youth is now on dvd
