The real target of the legislation is the under-16s whose tipple of choice is white cider, superlager or Bucky, and who have been known to pay junkies to buy it for them.
Think the writing has been on the wall for a while that the drink culture is next to be whomped with the authority stick. If people drank sensibly there'd be no problem, but city centres are awash with piss and vomit and blood from those that think drinking themselves into unconsciousness is having a good time; staff at A&E departments are considering themselves lucky if they only get verbal abuse from the injured pissheads that end up in their departments; and of course you have the violent behaviour of those unable to hold their drink.
Medical staff, the police, taxi drivers, takeaway employees, and the general public deserve to be protected. A shrug of the shoulders and a "Hey, I was oot of ma heid, man" is no excuse.
Supermarkets in particular look upon cheap booze as a golden egg layer for them. Sooner rather than later they are going to have to take responsibility and stop encouraging binge drinking.
And before anyone starts, I'm not trying to stop anyone over the legal limit drinking alcohol. They have that right. I'm not even advocating the mid-teens not drink (since I did it myself, that would be hypocritical). But drinking beyond the point where you can make sensible decisions is asking for trouble.

Re: Age to buy alcohol
i think its kids in general have too much power these days.
we used to treat kids like shit sending them off down coal mines and into sweat shops not so long ago. they werent even fortunate enough to get an education of any sort.
now we wrap them up in cotton wool so tight becasue of the guilt and they get away with murder!
its going to end up like some crazy movie plot where the kids take over the world and anarchy ensues.
i used to laugh at old people who said the youth of today has no respect but i agree with them now.

I am agreeing with the reasons of the Scottish parliament behind it which isn't as you put to stop them from having a drink at the weekend.

It wasn't a piss take as such. Just a dig at the pathetic Shami Chipolata types.

I've no time for the women and while I could use its real name I can't be arsed, refuse to recognize her existence and the self attention seeking publicity seeking stunts she often performs and more importantly most people recognize her for the Goody 'tag'.

Do you not think that the hypocritical tag needs to end?
When I was young and to my shame I sailed extremely close to a criminal record, stayed off school regularly, choosing to cause misery to others instead of getting an education and doing some very bad things without any thought to the consequence.
I am paying the price heavily now.
I don't think its hypocritical to tell anyone of my experiences if it helps them not to make the same mistakes I made or stopping them when possible from making the mistakes.
Although life is a learning curve if anything can be done that will make future life easier for others I think it should be automatic that we do it.

Re: Age to buy alcohol
The trouble with that, RA, is my 16-year-old self would never pay attention to what my middle-aged self had to say on the subject. For the most part, life is learning from our own mistakes---and recognising if we'd listened to what others told us we might not have had to make them in the first place.

Forgive my ignorance then, for it isn't obvious to me. I didn't take your quotes out of context, as I'll give my reason below.
I am agreeing with the reasons of the Scottish parliament behind it which isn't as you put to stop them from having a drink at the weekend.
If raising the age limit from 18 to 21 isn't stopping 18, 19 and 20 year olds having a drink at the weekend -at least legally-, what's your definition?

Re: Age to buy alcohol
Why? You could quash all my confusion by telling me where you stand on raising the age limit on alcohol consumption.
Should it be raised to 21 or not? If there's something I'm missing point it out. Please forgive me if I've no inclination of trawling the web to digest other countries' legislations (if you were that interested in me reading it, you'd have supplied a link).
It's a simple enough question, and if I've misinterpreted everything you've said, I'm sure you could easily rectify it.
