Kind of surreal watching Mark Thompson praising Wheeler on the lunchtime news, when the dumber and dumber BBC News pisses on his legacy.

There are still some real, old-fashioned reporters at the corporation, but the powers that be prefer the photogenic presenters to folk who actually go out and find stories.

Wheeler was a giant.

I remember as a lad watching his reports from Vietnam.

They were searing in their impact - why I can remember them forty years later.

Seeing reports like Wheelers on the TV every night impacted on US public opinion to such an extent that it eventually forced the US out of the wall
As you say he was a giant - where is that level of quality in news reportage today?

The US learnt the lesson from Vietnam; they wouldn't let reporters of Charles Wheeler's stature within a million miles of Iraq.

TV is so dumbed-down now that I guess media would report it anyway.
And of course we can?t upset the Yanks!

Wheeler was a legend, a true professional of the highest class. He, later in his life, was one of the leading critics of the dumbing down of the BBC.

His passing is a sad loss for quality broadcasting.

Probably the last of his kind. He simply reported the facts, No hyperbole, no spin. His gravitas and use of language added authority to everything he covered.
