If they were motivated by principles of public service and not personal gain then there would be less corruption.

Most of the Politicians are from advantaged backgrounds and beneficiaries of expensive private education. Their families don't want a modest return on that investment so they go into law, business, and more recently media and politics becomes just one more income stream. I think for the overwhelming majority of them their first thought is about what they're getting and not what they're giving, and their second thought is probably about the retention of their position and power. Their constituency and the common good is some way down the list of priorities on a day-to-day basis.

Now-now, Eric, you know full well that 99.9999999999999% of al councillors, MPs, Euro-MPs, MSPs, members of the Irish and Welsh assemblies etc are only in it for public service. Any other suggestion is a terrible slur on the character of these selfless individuals.
