In certain countries, stoning women to death is legal, in some religious circumstances---but it doesn't make it right. You could, if you chose, beat the shite out of someone who didn't vote for Mugabe in Zimbabwe and get away with it. Still doesn't make it ethical.

Not worth the journey, seeing the aoc in Italy is 14 as well. Interestingly Canada have recently upped the aoc from 14 to 16 to fight sexual crime. In the Czech Republic it was always 15, so can't see the reason for lowering it. 14/15 not really any difference, but it's for them to decide alone - the morals we're taught to accept are no more valid than theirs.

But knowing the Czechs there'll be some devious motive behind the change - probably an EU grant for it, an increase in tourism, trafficking Slovakians into brothels or whatever.

You may well be right there Johnny. I wouldnt consider the aoc to be that serious on a government agenda dropping it lower by a year.

I immediately thought there was some dubious reason behind it. Surely this protects human traffickers and peados that bit more.

"Oh sorry your honour. I didnt know she was 10. She said she was 14"

14 just sounds frightfully low. That is definitely kiddie territory I'm sure.

Medically its been proven that under age sex is bad in the long run due to increases in things llike cancer so why the government would endorse this is beyond me. A childs maturity is nothing to do with it and a poor excuse.

I've always thought -remembering I was once a teenager too- that the age of consent should indeed be lowered to......say.....14. Most teenagers are physically able as well as being incredibly curious about sex. The only drawbacks are the mental and emotional naivety, or inexperience in making the right decisions for themselves; this leads to the other drawback of being taken advantage of by sicko, mental blokes who would use every trick in the book just to get a young lass into bed.

Why can't common sense prevail and there be 2 aoc's? Can we not make it legal for 14-17 year olds to have sex within that age group, but no sex with adults; then when they turn 18 they're at liberty to choose older partners if they're so inclined? Surely this stops older blokes taking advantage of a more liberal aoc law, as well as take away the guilt and criminalisation we place upon teenagers who want to follow their natural feelings and urges?

I think you will find Sam that is the case here in the UK, a lot of people think the age of consent here is 16 which it is if you are also 16-17 but if you are 18 or over i think you can still be done for having sex with a 16 year old ?.

Thats the situation in Holland. The age of consent is lowered to 12 in "near of age" cases, that is, there can be no more than 4 years between the participants until they reach 16.

I haven't heard of anything bad resulting from this, so I'm assuming its working.

Terry, I think you'll find that the law will work in a similar manner to Holland in so far as while two 14 year olds or a 16 and 14 year old can have sex together, a 25 year old, for example, having sex with a 14 year old would still be prosecuted.

As for loss of innocence... go back to the 14th or 15th centuries and you'll find a lot of material regarding 12 and 13 year olds getting married!!! It's only relatively recently (1885) that the current age of consent was set at 16. In the 1860s the age of consent was 12, later raised to 13 in 1875.

The problem with this country is a lack of education... sex education in schools is pretty crap, and parents can opt out their children in case they might actually learn something useful, and most teenage parents are the offspring of mothers who were teenegers themselves when they became parents, so know no better. The benefits system also plays into their hands.
