'kinell Alice he's 74 .. for one thing his curfew requires him to be at home between 11am and 11pm and even if that weren't so I don't think he's going to go on a murderous spree on some kind of whim.
It does seem a lenient sentence passed on the basis that they can't be arsed coughing-up to accommodate him in a prison or secure hospital. Cheaper to have a probation officer, social worker and community nurse check-up on him.

According to the report, the wife's arteries weren't in the best of states and it wouldn't have taken much pressure to stop the blood flow to the brain. Maybe he just lost his temper and didn't mean to kill her?
