A girl i know has just got one of those free laptops frpm Carphone Wharehouse where you sign up to an AOL broadband deal, anyway she asked me if i could set the comp up, but the trouble is the premises where she is at only has a line for incoming calls and she told them this when placing the order but they said it wouldnt be a problem as the laptop would come with a wireless router so you can connect to the internet without a phone line, well thats fine but to set the account up you have to make the first connection through a phone line by dialling out before you can make a wireless connection, her AOL id is her landline phone number so would it worked if i set it up through another landline, any suggestions please, thanks in advance.

Re: Techie Help Please
Once they have set up broadband on the line, Plug the router into the ADSL filter on the phoneline and connect the laptop to the router via the network port, follow the instructions that come with the router regarding setup (usually http://192.168.0.1) You can setup wireless access once the router has been setup via cable.
Remember to security enable the wireless connection (WPA or greater)
This tutorial should help.

Re: Techie Help Please
Hi johnsix thanks for your help, the problem being that her phone line is only incoming so i cannot make the connection through it , so would it work if i made the connection on another line, bearing in mind that her user ID is her landline phone number, anyone got any ideas apart from telling her to send it back and cancel the direct debit, thanks again for any help.
Re: Techie Help Please
You don't need outgoing or incoming calls for adsl, all you need is the phone line. The two are very much separate entities. So it shouldn't make any difference you just need to connect to the node at the exchange.

Re: Techie Help Please
I doubt wether anyone is interested but i will give you an update on this saga, after spending at least ?25.00 on the AOL helpline at 5p per minute local rate but remember this was only an incoming line so we had to call them on a mobile, anyway you get through to the call centre in India and i couldnt understand a word they were chanting so i asked the women on the other end if she could speak plain English and she pulled the plug on me, before you can connect to Wi-Fi you have to make your first connection through your landline to set up the account, my friend explained from the outset that her line was an incoming one only but they said this would not be a problem, anyway i asked a BT engineer who i know is this possible and he said there is know chance as you need both an incoming and outgoing line line to make a connection, so i advised her to cancel the direct debit and tell them to come and collect the laptop, and their reply was there will be a ?220.00 charge for the laptop, they stand know chance but a word of warning be very cautious when signing up for these free laptop deals !wink!

Works both ways that Graham, it's like - she phones you for advice and then asks you to speak plain urdu....lol.
"so i advised her to cancel the direct debit and tell them to come and collect the laptop, and their reply was there will be a ?220.00 charge for the laptop, they stand know chance "
Actually they stand every chance, your friend entered a contract, it's not CW's fault she only has an incoming line, they are entitled to the payment.
On the upside if they only want ?220 for the lappy, and are willing to end the BB contract, take it.

Liz,
I'm not a solicitor so wouldn't like to argue the legal niceties but this is my take on it.
Planet's friend informed CW that she had an "incoming call only" telephone line. CW said "that would be no problem" which was obviously incorrect. Therefore, in my humble opinion, Planet's friend entered into the contract on "false information" provided by CW. CW should have informed her that it wouldn't work and should have declined to enter into the contact for their part.
I could be wrong but that's the way I see it.

Re: Techie Help Please
Sorry Graham I did not read your original post, it's not possible to have BB on an incoming line only, she should be able to terminate the contract on the basis that she informed them of that.
