I'm happy to say I don't recycle and have no intention to ever doing so. I thought that's why the greedy bastards at the council screwed me for ?100 a month in Council Tax - so they can recycle my rubish if they desire to do so.

The analogy makes sense.
You don't drink and drive, not to reduce crime/death figures, but because it's the right thing to do; lower death figures, as a result of the majority doing the right thing, is just a positive by-product; and so, if everybody did the right thing regarding being as green as possible, the net affect would be positive for the environment, and consequently, all of us.

Well, it was 'the people' that pressured the Church to change it's stance on slavery, which in turn forced Parliament to ban it, coming in line with Russian and Portuguese stances (though not slave trade). Within 25 years it was illegal throughout the Empire, including slave trading with other European slavers and our navy was then employed to patrol Africa's west coast to stop slaves being taken to the Americas.
10 years, and a lot of bribing later, we signed treaties with Portugal & Spain for them to abolish slavery; France and Holland followed and the rest is history.
It always starts with the people, Alice.
