Always thought he was a shifty bastard - bt as far as Mike Smith is concerned, just what was he doing on that fence? - a bad day in retrospect.

>Every song any member wrote for the band, Clark would add himself to the credits.

This is fairly common in the music business.

Buddy Holly's manager was Norman Petty. Buddy wrote all those famous songs on his own, but Norman insisted on co-writing credit and many Buddy Holly songs are said to be Holly/Petty compositions.

Al Jolson often insisted on adding his name as co-writer to a song. The writers knew if it was sung by Jolson it would be a hit and sell lots of sheet music so they often agreed.

And in fact when the Beatles started Lennon and McCartney signed a music publishing deal which would not let them write a song on their own, it had to be Lennon / McCartney song.

Even late in the life of the Beatles, when often John or Paul would write a Beatles song on their own, it still had to be published as a Lennon / McCartney song.

This is why when the Beatles broke up John's songs were Lennon/Ono songs, and Paul's were published as Paul/Linda songs because the contract was still in place to stop them writing on their own.

On Paul's first solo album he had the song "Man we was lonely" and he had the lines:

I Used to Ride on My Fast City Line
Singing Songs That I Thought Were Mine Alone

And he was refering to the fact that John got co-writing credit on say "Yesterday" even thought he had nothing to do with it (in fact none of the other Beatles even played or sang on it)

Excellent post.
DC was always an enigma in the industry. AS you say, The truth will only come out once DC has popped his clogs.
I agree about Catch Us If You Can, I have it on VHS, The whole film has an odd feel to it. I always thought the David de Keyser role was very near to DC
in many ways. I'm not sure if DC is 'acting' or is in fact very unhappy about the whole thing, He certainly doesn't smile much in the film.

From the rather melancholic song that ends the film through to the premise of a 'celebrity' wanting to escape control and purchasing Burgh Island it does seem to be making a lot of statements.

Mike Smith shines in it as you would expect, A more likely lead than DC.
Robin Bailey and Yootha Joyce as a pair of sexual predators show some more ambiguity as to who is after who.

A more thorough description can be found here for those who haven't seen it.

Wrong Mike Smith. Fuck, I thought he'd crashed his helicopter again.

I must say, I didn't know Dave Clark was such a cunt. Very educational!
