Just caught the news last night that the head of the olympic federation believes britain should look to doubling its budget for the 2012 games !!!!...hes good...he doesn't have to pay for it!!...
Which reminded me of a conversation with a guy in Switzerland earlier this year...... he was saying that "britain cannot afford 2012 and winning the bid was one of the worst cases of getting the figures wrong.......and whats' more with the global slow down, recession etc. the private sector investors will not be there........2012 will be a debt that will be with future generations for a long time..."
I bet the rest of the world is glad they never won the bid !!!
2012...should we spend more ??

Thats funny the BBC were reporting Tessa Jowell as saying no more money would be spent.
IF anything some of the less favoured sports will lose funding to those with the best chance of winning, which is a shame.

I also can't believe the figures but I doubt very much that the private sector industry investors won't be interested, if anything and if the GB teams performance remains higher than expectations like it currently is then more 'internal investors' will probably be jumping on the 2012 band wagon.
I think when you look at investment the example to look at is the Manchester Velodrome and the returns it has clearly achieved, Chris Hoy 3 golds for example, plus the other benefits it has brought to the area, the sport and the numbers of young people taking it up.
That to cost money and if I recall there were a lot of arguments about it at the time but for most the only thing that matters now is the teams performance and I even suspect those who were ranting then are secretly celebrating.

Not sure about that I suspect there are some nations planing bids for the next event after 2012 and will be for generations to come.

Nope, it's the LONDON Olympics, the bill's all yours!
I'm still paying off the debts incurred by Sheffield for the 1991 World Student Games, so unless I get a huge refund on that from the general taxation pot, I don't see why I should subsidise the London event.

We have need of you again, great king.
Re: 2012...should we spend more ??
Lets cancel it altogether. Funny how the BBC is continually going on 'green' issues toeing the government line, and yet not a dickie bird on the Olympics and the waste of resources, energy, involved. Anyway 'elf & safety won't be allowing any large naked flames in any case.

Considering your 3rd on the medal table I cant see much point in spending anymore than you have this time around which was a lot from anecdotal evidence.I'd doubt spending more would buy you any better performances
You could spend ten times as much and still fall short of China & America(who have had a shocker by their standards if you take out michael phelps and still finished 2nd)
