Tech help - dvd player/burner question.

Post by Bronson Lee »

I Just fitted a new power supply to my pc going from 480w to 500w, and now my dvd burner is juddering and slowing my pc down when I use it, I cant play/copy cd's or films without this juddering but they do copy, the dvd burner was playing fine before the new power supply so I dont think its anything to do with codecs, music and films that are already on my pc play fine, Ive Messed around with the jumper cables and ribbion, no luck and I have also turned on direct memory access (DMA). still no luck, its an ASUS DRW-2014L1 and I am using xp pro. any ideas?

Why did you change your Power Supply? If the old one had failed always the possibility one output went over voltage so has done some damage. If so it could actually be the motherboard that is affected rather than the DVD Drive.

Another possibility is the output of the new PSU is either slightly under or over voltage. Or new PSU is noisier so interference on signal to DVD drive. Difficult in PC cases but try to separate the PSU and DVD signal cables as far as possible.

We had a situation at work where a 400W PSU failed. We replaced with a 520W but PC kept shutting down after a few minutes.
We fitted a 370W of a different brand, but cost a little more and the system has been fine for at least a year.
We later put 520W in another PC and it has worked fine for around 9 months.

Cheers for the info Mynah, but its still juddering, I changed the power supply because it died last week, it was still letting some power through to light the on front but not booting the pc up, Ill try a back up dvd burner and another power supply. all the best.

Anyone with the same problem should try this

as it was a DMA issue in the end, just download this run it and reboot, thanks again to Mynah.

Interesting a PSU problem changed DMA settings, maybe settings became corrupted as PSU failed.

I'll note the link you found for the future.

Glad you are all sorted.
