According to an insider at the club, when it was announced to the first team squad that the new manager was Joke Kinnear, some understandably asked 'who the fuck is that?' and some of the more senior players burst out laughing!

But what if they had appointed Venables ? When you look at what Venables has won in England it amounts to little more than an FA Cup with Tottenham and that was ... 91? He won the liga with Barcelona and took them to the european cup final which they lost, but you could argue that the set-up of european clubs is such that the manager is less influential than at British clubs, and the Barcelona success was in the mid 80s.

If they had appointed Venables and the senior players had approved their approval would have been based on a delusional assessment of his abilities. What did Venables do at Boro, Leeds, Crystal Palace ie for the last 10-15 years? Kinnear did a good job at Wimbledon without the kind of resources enjoyed by Venables.

People can scoff at Kinnear's interim appointment, but what a great incentive for Kinnear to prove people wrong.
