Your Union Rep is a fucking idiot. Handing your notice in is regarded as deliberately giving up work. DWP and Housing Benefit will not be happy. If you had another job lined up then fine but quitting is not the most efective way of guaranteeing full benefits. Tell this to the DWP and emphasise the factory was moving away and was not convenient to your family situation.
Do you have a local Community Law Centre or CAB? If so gie them a call.
anyone know? benefits
Re: anyone know? benefits
I agree entirely.
Re: anyone know? benefits
Your union rep has stiffed you mate!Ihad a similar situation a few years ago,i told the firm i couldn't move with them and they had to make me redundant, after first trying to pressure me into quitting!luckily i had a good union rep who told me to sit tight and force their hand.
Go to your local CAB or Law Centre as suggested.

Re: anyone know? benefits
What union was that with ? sounds as big a bunch of monkey-spunkers as amicus . If your firms moving and keeping your job open albeit moving to a different location then they don't have to offer you redundancy , no matter what the distance of relocation is . I think it's shit they're not forced to offer the employee the choice , but there's no rules in place to force them to .
But jacking your job in and going to the dole office is the worst thing you can do ; even worse than being a serial killer !wink!

Re: anyone know? benefits
I worked for 20years for the same firm , although it's been bought out and teken over 3or4 times , and whenever they've sold out and they've moved jobs/employees on redundancy was never offered (which i think stinks) , but just before i got redundancy they'd got an outside labour agency to take over the cleaning of the factory and offices , so the 6 cleaners now no longer work for the factory they work for this employment agency (more cost effective to the company) so much for loyalty for being there 15years some of them . They'd consulted with amicus , but neither decided to let the peolpe involved know till it was all signed over . Wankers the lot of 'em . I think trade unions nowadays are a waste of time/money as they seem to have little to offer , 4 times i wanted to know something i'd ring them up and end up chasing them up to find out they'd sat on their hands for a week or finding out myself through goverment agencies or whatever . Re: anyone know? benefits
The funny thing is that many employers expect you to demonstrably love and live the job (often for mediocre wages) when you know that the commitment isn't reciprocated and in most cases you'll be shafted as and when it suits.
Also you know that the upper management show no loyalty when a better offer comes their way, so how can they reasonably expect it of other people? Of course, the lower down the 'food chain' you are maybe the less latitude there is for movement and you just have to sit tight and tolerate the bullsh*t and inauthenticity. Loyalty can't be commanded it has to be negotiated and a good way of doing that is by treating people as adults, listening to them and looking after them, then they'll be able to say they're 'really excited' by any new developments without faking it.
Lack of leadership, plain & simple !

Re: anyone know? benefits
You should have been insistent and told your employers that because of logistical reason you were unable to move or be relocated. Your employer would have probably either given you the sack, or offered redundancy.
These forms of leaving employment are far better than resigning because if you leave employment of your own volition you will not be entitled to any benefits for six months.
