Re: anyone know? benefits
I had loads of employment problems at one time and the only help my union gave me was to make matters worse - they wanted me to admit guilt to things I'd never done because the case could be cleared up quicker. They put me in a position where by pleading guilty I would be disciplined, but if I denied the trumped-up charges I could be sacked for misconduct. In the end I had to call their bluff and the employers case backfired, because the so-called proof never existed, they just thought I'd cave in under the pressure - it was nice to see the managers involved get hauled over the coals instead, one was forced to leave on early retirement. But in the end I was made redundant, which didn't bother me as I got a reasonable deal out of it. I agree that unions are rubbish - they take the money, but seem selective with the help.
Re: anyone know? benefits
A mate of mine became a union rep but for him it was like a vanity project - a source of status - rather than selflessly serving and working in the best interests of union members. I can understand why you would say that support can seem selective .. if they're status-seeking egotistical types they'll cherry-pick and prioritise the cases they're confident of getting a result in which make them look and feel successful - like 'winners' - instead of working equally hard for everyone. After all, everyone pays subs for the same service don't they .. it's not two tier.

Re: anyone know? benefits
Im not sure about this but i believe you are not entitled to jobseekers allowance if you left your employment of your own accord without good reason, therefore if the company you worked for were relocating and you could not follow them you had good reason to terminate your employment with them and should still be entitled to benefits, i would point this out in your letter and at the end of the day you can still take it to an independent tribunal.
Re: anyone know? benefits
Swampy, You should by law have been consulted re the move, and after pointing out you couldn't re-locate. In effect they were changing your terms and conditions (change of contract) they should have given you a contractual dismissal not a summary dismissal and paid you all the money's you were entiled to ie-: redundancy (partial) or goodwill payment, (compromise agreement) as far as jobseekers allowance goes cancelling that can only be done if you have just simply walked out of your job, because you couldn't be arsed doing it etc....so you should be entitled to jobseekers allowance because of your company's and your own circumstances, so as well as continuing to recieve js allowance, it may be worth contacting a solicitor and threatning a Tribunal re the change of contract, you may be entitled to some goodwill payment.
You should also mention the union reps advice when speaking to a solicitor or tribunal, you will need his/her name and the date the advice was given, a tribunal would rule on whether or not it was best practice and in your best interests.
good luck.
