Seems everyone has a disorder or syndrome these days, that excuses them from self responsibility and and self control.

Yes but a disproportionte number of celebs have bipolar. It's what drives them to be celebs in the first place and also people iwth bipolar tend to be extreme and take risks and are sometimes suicidal.

Its not a question of making excuses if someone with bipolar kills themself.

Have you noticed how so many celebrities, and celebrities relatives, "have bipolar" nowadays? It is the modern neurotic celebrity thing to have. In the 1980's if you were famous, had a bit too much time on your hands and had a bit too much money, you spent all your time going on about your weight and you went to a fat farm. In the 1990's rehab became the thing to do - the 1990's equivilant of the 1980's fat farm for such people - and that has continued into the 2000's. The really big thing for the 2000's though for these people is to "have bipolar" and to go on about it on TV and in print and to try and get treatment for it at some expensive place. And then to go on about the treatment you received, and whether you felt it worked or not, in every interview from then on. I wonder what the trend for famous neurotic celebrities, with too much money and time, will be in the 2010's?

Bipolar, no way - she's just your typical scummy chav who's been elevated to fame by chance. Chavs are usually stupid, they know how to drink, take drugs, fight and argue - but they're too dumb to be bipolar.

Being bipolar is deeply engrained and affects their thought processes. They are instinctively risk takers and attention seekers which is what motivates many bipolar sufferers to try and be a celeb in the first place.

arch stanton, there is nothing cool about having bipolar, it is a very serious thing. However, neurotic people who claim to have it just because it fits with a few things that are going on in their lives do nothing other than trivialise the seriousness of it. Everyone feels glum and pissed-off quite often and people who hang out at China Whites in the west end, glugging expensive champers and talking about how cool they are are no more likely to have bipolar than any other group of people. It's funny how there is not a disproportionately high number of farmers who 'have bipolar', or a disproportionately high number of Civil Servants or airline piliots that do, yet there is a very high proportion of celebritries in the UK and the US who claim to. Kind of suggests that a lot of them don't and that it is basically just these people being neurotic and wanting something to go on about. Just like the huge diet industry that existed - for wealthy people with few real problems who needed something to go on about - in the 1980's, or how most stars went to The Priory in the 1990's, this is the modern 'cool thing' to have. People who really have it are people who should be taken very seriously. Most of these 'celebs' do not have it and just want something to focus on and to go on about.

High risk takers in other walks of life I think are also often bipolar. That police chief who was found dead on a mountainside a few months ago sounds to me exactly like a bipolar sufferer. He was a high achiever and risk taker. He had a very high pressure existance and career but still had a string of secret extra marital affairs. When he got found out he topped himself, Most people would not take the kind of risks he took including trying to shag a load of women on the quiet and expecting to get away with it. It was especially sensitive because of his high profile and high pressure job.
