UPDATE

God, I feel terrible.

Well, it's day four and I'm still on the cigarettes, as per The Perrin System.

I spent most of yesterday coughing. I noticed that just by walking to the lavatory and back to my study, I was quite out of breath.

I again had a coughing fit this morning, but there was no vomiting, no doubt due to the fact that the cigarettes have devastated my appetite and I had no supper. I can also see that the index and middle fingers of my right hand are turning a shade of brown again.

I do miss the delicious flavours of my various pipe tobaccos; the foul taste of these cigarettes, with all the chemicals added to their plain virginia, is most unappetising.

You know, this is all beginning to remind me - quite vividly - of why I switched to the pipe in the first place.

My doctor, far from being of 1950s vintage, is quite a young chap. He most certainly does not approve of my pipe smoking, but he does concede that the improvement in my health over the last twelve months was nothing short of astonishing and could only be attributed to my abandonment of cigarettes in favour of the pipe - the evidence being right in front of him.

In spite of all this - and the pleadings of my wife - I still have faith in Dr Perrin's argument that there is little difference between cigarette smoking and pipe smoking, so I won't be giving up on his System quite yet.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for keeping the group informed Steve. If you have any more deeply personal information, such as, Bowel movements (frequency of), hair loss, loss of appetite, erectile disfunction etc etc, I'm sure Dr Perrin and the rest of us non medical types would be most grateful.
It must be a great feeling to have your own personal forum medical adviser on board.

Why, thank you, Liz.

It is indeed comforting to know that I am among friends (humans and squamata alike) who will not hesitate to offer me medical advice - whether asked for, or not.

I do, of course, feel particularly secure under the watchful eye of the esteemed proctologist, Dr Perrin.

No I didn't. I said that it is unneccessary and indeed incorrect to inhale whilst smoking a pipe.

Does driving a car involve killing people - for it happens?
