He does have a point, and I'm speaking as a cameraman, though light years away from this sort of shoot. You dont walk through an actors' eyeline. A bit of support from the director might have been nice for the DoP, but he probably didn't want to annoy the 'talent' any further. It would have been interesting to see what someone like Kubrick would have done in similar circumstances. Apparently on the first day's shooting with Matthew Modine on Full Metal Jacket, Stanley shot take after take over the poor guy's in-shot shoulder, just to show him who was boss on a Kubrick set.

Should have made more films Reggie. In the 'Kubrick's Boxes' documentary it was said that he was meticulously doing pre-production on a holocaust related film. Pre-production took years .. meanwhile Speilberg shot Shindler's List and blew him out of the water. Perfectionism is spelt p-a-r-a-l-y-s-i-s as Churchill said.
Re: Christian Bale's Outburst
Kubrick- scared of flying- had the interiors of the hotel in The Shining created at Pinewood...and then took three weeks to film one scene with Scatman Crothers taking the little lad through the kitchen and pantry.
Three weeks! Poor old Crothers lost count after the 5,000th take of the scene and nearly had a breakdown.

The guy has form
It seems that this DoP has a history of giving similar tirades to his crew. One disgruntled ex-member says on a board that he wishes he'd been there to see the guy get it, as he had suffered a couple of bouts of bile from Hurlbut recently.

That would've been Aryan Papers, based on the excellent Wartime Lies by Louis Begley, and yes, Schindler's List did allegedly put it on hold. It's said that before his death he was thinking of going back to his Napoleon project, which really would've been something.
re: Bale. Is that really director McG wimpering in the background? Not the healthiest of sets, is it.

Re: Christian Bale's Outburst
The Hotel was built at Elstree, and suffered badly in a fire during the protracted shoot. The joke, and I emphasise JOKE, at the time was that Kubrick was taking so long that all the studio could do, as the Empire Strikes Back was waiting to get in, was burn him out. The crazy bugger just went and rebuilt it.
