This is really tragic. If I've got the numbers right, a 17 year old embittered nutcase entered the school and killed 16 teenagers, then (in what sounds like the plot from a Hollywood film) hijacked a car at gunpoint, telling the 2 occupants to get out, then he drove 24 miles before running into a shopping mall. He then had a shoot out with Police where he shot and injured two Police officers, killed two passers-by, before the Police shot him dead.
His family owned about 15 legally held weapons, and he took one of them to do all that he did today. The debate about gun ownership will inevitably re-open as a result of this, but I was thinking something else when watching it all on the News: I was wondering how much of a role TV, films, and video games have to play in influencing someone to do this.
Do you remember that American rap group in the 1990's called "The Disposable Heroes Of Hip-hop-risy" and their very serious track "Television" - all about the damaging influence TV has on society? Along with other hard-hitting lyrics in the song was the following: "how can we be expected to raise a safe generation when the average child has witnessed over two thousand murders by the time they are 12 years old?".

It isn't possible to legislate against lunatics - things like this happen every now and again. It's happened in Germany before
"In April 2002, Germany suffered its worst school shooting when a gunman killed 17 people, including himself, at a high school in the eastern city of Erfurt."
