That was a good laugh when Gary Barlow paid ?50,000 for a private jet to bring back the Celebs from the Kilimanjaro climb, rather than them having to slum it in First Class on a scheduled airline.

How many malaria bed nets could ? 50 (k) have bought ?

Ah well at least it got Cheryl back quicker so she could give Ashley his kicking sooner.

Jaded old has-beens and jumped-up stars of the small screen. trying to get publicity for themselves on the back of charity. If Gary Barlow can afford ?50,000 for a helicopter down, maybe he should have stayed at home and just given the money to charity in the first place.

Most reasonably fit person can walk up it - there is an 80% success rate for people attempting it.

I steer clear of it. Haven't watched it for years. Most of it falls into the "unfunny and crap" category.

And the few clips of it that they showed of it on BBC News the following day only cemented that opinion even further in my mind.

Never give a cent. All foreign aid should stop and be spent rebuilding the mess Brown has left in the UK.

Have to agree.

And yet only a couple of days ago, Broon pledged yet another 200 million to Africa "to help them fight the recession".

I thought that the cupboard was supposed to be bare, and yet they keep coming up with vast sums to bale out the banks and throw at the Third World.

An easy mistake. Shut one eye and Comic Relief is Children in Need; equally smug, self-congratulating and self righteous.

Encouraging the public to be charitable is probably a good thing on the whole, but it's charity, not an obligation, and overbearing attention-hoggers like these reduce the deal to an unpleasant blend of mawkishness and arm-twisting. I've nothing against those willing to take part, but I don't like the idea that people somehow ought to.

I'm told there's also some controversy as to how much money actually gets through to the cause, and isn't frittered on complicated admin and expenses. So the only part of their bargain you can rely on is an evening of extraordinarily bad television. Not much for your dosh, eh.
