As I remember it, Michael Holding was the batsman and Peter Willey was bowling to him, hence that classic comment from dear old Brian Johnston.

Not sure you're right. A quick google search reveals that almost all sources agree with this:

'In the Oval Test of 1976, England -v- West Indies, Brian Johnston refers to the players Michael Holding and Peter Willey: ?The bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey?.'
