Sorry Lizardo, I found your ravings of madness about the Tories quite quite humorous...

"Lizard, trust me on this one. The Tory front-bench is probably 30 or 40 strong and more than half of them ARE related to the Queen. They are not her niece or nephew but are connected by family. Aswell as that, over 50% of them have a family line of Tory ministers of yesteryear - parent, father-in-law, great uncle sat in the Lords, and so on.

Sorry Max, but you are simply wrong, being related to the Queen would have to be by birth not nepetism. The fact that someone got someone a peerage is irrelevant. NONE of the shadow cabinet front bench are blood relatives to the Queen, My brother has met the Queen several Times for reasons I dont want to go into on here, We are as different as chalk and cheese, and rareley see each other, I do know however, he is not related to the Queen, we are both products of my Mother, she is Irish and has never been a serving Monarch.

If it is close coming up to an election then a certain man who lives on a Thunderbirds-type island in the Pacific comes to the fore. His name is Murdoch, Rupert Murdoch, and he will swing it for whichever leader offers him the best deal for his business empire in Britain.

Tony Blair accepted two free airline flights, in secret, to Murdoch's lair back in early-1997, and within weeks the Murdoch press were very heavily behind Blair. The Tories revealed this as it is illegal for a front bench politican to accept free flights like that. I do understand Blair position though because the Murdoch press had largely destroyed Labour's chances of getting into office for many years, and they very directly won the election for John Major in 1992.

A former senior advisor to Tony Blair revealed recently in a TV interview that the only reason Blair promised a refererendum on the European Single Currency was because Murdoch demanded it, and much of Blair's European policy has been shaped by Murdoch's wants. Wonderful isn't it? Rupert Murdoch has never lived in Britain, he can't vote here, and he pays no tax here, yet he decides what happens...

How can you, as an Irish citizen, support the Tories?

Are you out of your mind?

lizard, I didn't say everyone related to the Queen ends up in politics, nor did I say that everyone who meets her is of the same character and ethos as her and will wind up a politican either. I think you misunderstood me.

I lost faith in politicians of all shades years ago.

They're all self-serving cunts who are completely detached from the real world. And for all their fine words about "helping working families" and all that bollocks, first and foremost they're all just in it to feather their own nests and (as has been said in posts above) scratch each other's backs.

The only thing that your average politician is actually *competent* at is smooth talking, along with quick-thinking to give clever answers (or else duck the question completely) when put on the spot.

I'm not saying that they aren't intelligent - no. Because that does take a certain type of intelligence and a very sharp mind. They are generally highly skilled and wordsmiths, debaters and verbal gynmasts. They're extremely articulate. Which is how many of them get to where they are in the first place (that and connections): They talk a good talk.

But when it comes to running an economy competently and applying real-world solutions to real-world problems - forget it.

Because even though some of them may enter the world of politics with noble intentions to "make a difference" and all the rest of it, it's not long before they become seduced by the trappings of power, influence and all those lovely allowances and copper-bottomed pension schemes that the rest of us can only dream about. So they end up not really caring so much any more - because "they're alright Jack".

And the higher they ascend the party ladder, the more corrupted and detached from the real world and the everyday concerns of ordinary working folk they become.

Even those who come from relatively humble roots - it doesn't take long for them to quickly forget their origins (John Prescott being a prime example).

Whether it's Tory, Labour of the LibDems - it really doesn't matter. They're all crap. Which is why - when it comes to voting - for most voters it's not a question of which party / candidate is the "best", but which one is the "least crap". Hence the problem of voter apathy, and the reason why a party can win office with the backing of just 35% of the votes cast and a mere 22% of the *total* electorate, as Labour did in 2005.

It doesn't really matter where you are either: Over here in Germany we have the SPD ("Labour") the CDU/CSU ("Tories") and the FDP ("LibDems"), and they're all pretty crap as well - though perhaps not quite as crap as the shoddy selection that you guys in the UK are lumbered with.

Almost agreed. Not all are like the above but the majority are.

Diane Abbot is the best example.

Won awards for talking in Parliament. Her constituency is in a mess but she can find the time to feather her own nest every Thursday talking bollocks on the BBC's This Week.
