I also think that if, say, Labour put in more regulations on banks, et al, 10 years ago then I'm sure there would have been outrage that the 'socialists' have started poking their nose in and restricting growth. They would have screamed about bureaucracy and red tape strangling the economy, etc etc....
I agree, though. We should curb greed and mindless lending, etc.
One thing I do remember as a kid in the 80s was what Neil Kinnock said about giving people the right to buy their own homes: He said it would create a shortage of council housing which would shoot up house prices, making them unaffordable for most workers.
Well, he ended up being spot on. The late 90s was full of news about how even well paid teachers/nurses couldn't afford houses which inevitable led to a need for 100% mortgages and easy credit, which has finally got us in this mess (or at least contributed).

Again, I'm no economist....but:
Wouldn't building lots of new, affordable council estates lower the prices of houses people own? That would mean that people paying mortgages would be paying way, way more than what the house will be worth and they'd tell the lenders to shove the house up their arse. This would lead to the same economic crisis we have now, so we've not solved the problem at all.
Of course, with an ever growing population the government will have to invest in affordable housing a lot more than they're currently doing. It won't affect the current climate overnight, though.
