But you've got to admire their persistence.
She had to marry someone, I suppose, and he's turned out better
than people thought he would in the late 1940s.

The alternative to these 'idlers' is a presidential system, and look
at some of those the Yanks ended up with

Ok, so no RF and no presidents.
Do we then still need a ceremonial head of state?

I'm wary of buggering around with our constitution- experience
elsewhere suggests that any major change is usually for the worse.

I thought you were talking about the bitch who was whacked with the baton http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/957 ... this-to-me - apparently she's a heroin addict and has never worked a day in her life, apart from helping out at an animal sanctuary. An anti-capitalist who still likes her benefits and hiring that asshole Max Clifford.

Never done a day's work in his life? Obviously six years at sea with the Royal Navy during World War II never happened then. Phil the Greek was a full time naval officer until 1952, when King George VI died and Elizabeth became Queen. The King was only 56 when he died, if he'd lived to his three score and ten Phil would have stayed in the Navy, which was the career he loved. I've got no time for smears like this.

Probably spent all his time in the navy making tea and taking it up the back end :)

Prince Phillip was 'the man in the mask' at one of those high society orgies that took place in the early-1960's in London. The room contained several people involved in the John Profumo scandal, some of London's movers and shakers, and some of London's most infamous aswell. The Profumo scandal (which involved the Minister For War John Profumo having affairs with several callgirls, one of which was also having an affair with a Russian spy. It was the height of the Cold War, and put the shivers up everyone.)

Profumo lied in Parliament about many things concerning his associations when asked, and the episode brought down the Conservative Government of 1963. Politics has never been the same since. If you see the film "Scandal", starring John Hurt as Profumo, you see the orgy scene in that. It is a Certificate 18 film and deserves to be! 'The man in the mask' is naked apart from an apron and mask and is handing out drinks while everyone shags each other. He has a sign on his apron saying "beat me if I fail to satisfy" and there is something on his tray to beat him with if you want to. See the "Scandal" film. It's very good. Was made in about 1988.

jj, there marriage was enabled by Lord Mountbatton. He pulled strings to speed up Phillip's residency application (Phillip is Greek and only had a Greek passport) by having meeting with friends of his who were Government ministers. Mountbatten almost became the leader of this country in 1976 when MI5 almost staged a koup (yes a koup, like the kind you get in African countries) to overthrow the socialist Government led by Harold Wilson). Mountbatten was killed in 1981 by the IRA. If it hadn't been for him the Queen and Phillip would unlikely have married.

Phillip does work hard, has many engagements throughout the year. Probably 500-odd which is often several a day. A bit of trivia: did you know that all 3 of his sisters married senior Nazi's in the 1930's? True.
