Re: Election date?
There are certain landmark events which occur in politics that people should never forget. One is the John Major/Norman Lamont ERM fiasco, and its follow on, in 1992 and into 1993. Because they just wanted to arrograntly stay in office, smirked a lot, didn't apologise for the disaster that was our ejection from the ERM, their popularity went from being reasonably high (they had only just won an Election) to being about 10 points below that of the Boston Strangler - all within a few months. [For those not aware, Lamont was Major's Chancellor and Britain lost ?15b in one afternoon when we were thrown out of the European 'Exchange Rate Mechanism' (ERM), something John Major has championed and Lamont had supported. Interest rates changed twice in one day because of that and were put up so high as a result that vast numbers of people lost their homes, and huge numbers of businesses went bust. Neither men cared or apologised, and carried on - literally - like nothing had happened]. The Tories, who had won 4 consecutive elections, lost the next election more heavily than any party had done since The Great Reform Act of 1832.
That event proved that egotisitical, I'm-in-office-for-myself-and-my-lust-for-power politicans, who believe little in democracy and largely only in themselves and their own miserable careers, basically become grossly unpopular very quickly and the public don't just hate them but loathe and despise them. Brown's view that he would only allow a general election, 2 years ago, if the public would vote for him, and he wouldn't allow the public to vote if they werent going to vote for him, was the deathnail for Brown and put him in Major/Lamont territory. The Labour Government could be massacred at the next election. If, over the next 18 months, infighting starts in a massive way within the party, the Murdoch press turn against Labour, the general mood in the country is that "they are on the way out", and also David Cameron seems appealing as PM, then Brown and Labour will have what happened to the Tories in 1997 happen to them. It is already very likely because of Brown's mammoth ego, arrogrance, and total non-belief in democracy. These other things happen and the party will be blown to smithereens next year...
