The fact is nobody likes the Gypsies, because wherever they go they cause trouble. This is the case all over Europe, including their home country. The glamorous/romantic image they once had, headed up by poster boys like David Essex is long gone - to be replaced by images like this:

Re: Belfast
Captain, just because people from the UK could go and ponse off another country it doesnt mean it is right, or should be overlooked, when people come here and do it. If loads of Brits did that I am sure lots of the locals there would be pissed off that we were doing it, therefore it is not out-of-order for us to be pissed off when people come here and do it. I doubt there are any Brits pretending to be homeless and flogging the Big Issue in other European countries, and doing it legally and within the rules of the Big Issue magazine. There are lots of foreigners here doing it - Romanians mostly as I said.

Well, Max, I haven't the best of memories; I mean, my memory is ok but I wouldn't call it anything special, or superhuman. What I remember, though, is a post from you a while back that, while not contradictory, may make you rethink your views slightly when criticising these poor Romanians who've been driven from their homes. For the record, these Romanians might have been the neighbours from hell, I don't know, but if we don't know the facts then we must surely give these people the benefit of the doubt and presume them innocent, nice people ? no?
Anyway, those snippets from your post:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Max said: "I knew Brits over there however who used the health service and never paid the bills they were then given (not me I hasten to add) and I knew people who worked cash-in-hand all the time and never paid a penny in tax. In fact most Brits over there who work are doing cash-in-hand stuff and only pay tax occasionally. The Brits who go to Australia for a year or two get more out of the country than Australia gets out of them - and probably cost the Aussie Goverment a bit aswell."
Max also said: "People often gave a false name and address at a hospital (again - not me) and then the subsequent bill would never be sent to them. One English guy I knew had to be rushed to A&E after being mugged and injured and he was then sent the ambulance bill and the medial bills. He left the country and came back here a week later and the bill still remains unpaid. "
Max finished with: "Loads of Brits would show up at these [charity soup kitchens] every day for a free meal and then go back to their hostel afterwards. They had money for their own food but thought they would eat for free there and then have more money for beer later. "
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is the post I'm quoting you from:
It doesn't matter where you're from, what sexuality you are or what colour skin you have. Some people are bad, some good; some are hard working, some lazy; some are racist, some are not.
I thank you.

Re: Belfast
sam slater, I remember those posts well. What I said about Australia was to point out that lots of Brits do the same there as here. Some Brits that are is Oz on a working visa probably take a bit more than they give, and the same with Aussie's who come here on a visa. The thing about the expansion of Europe and that all 27 EU countries are kind of like 27 counties within one country (and someone can move from one bit of the EU now as move from Kent to Sussex) is that it is indefinate. Permanent basically. No Brits in Australia would get housed at the domestic taxpayers expense, be able to get Benefits, protection from the law, Legal Aid, free schooling, free education, etc. All the people coming here can. There is also a limit to how many visitors will be granted work visas for Australia (and they will only go for a year od two) whereas the EU lot who come here can come forever if they want and get all the things I've just mentioned. My comments today do not contradict anything I said in recent months. It's a differnt thing.

If you look at my previous post I said that your points regarding Brits in Oz and teh Romanians over here weren't contradictory. Go check.
I was making the point that anyone can be as good, or bad as anyone else. Not all Romanians are bad, not all Brits good. Some people will take advantage of welfare states and some won't. We just happen to live in a wealthier, more tolerant part of the EU and people from poorer, less tolerant parts will naturally want to come here.
You don't know how good or bad these Romanians were. For all you know they might have been a more positive influence on Belfast's society than the dicks that scared them away.
You have a privileged lifestyle compared to most East Europeans, Africans and Middle Eastern immigrants. Cheer up!
