Freddie and the boys

Post by bristolian »

Doesn't the brilliance of this test match just confirm that:

1. Test cricket is where it's at, forget your pyjama cricket.
2. Beating the whingeing Aussies is special
3. Freddie is probably the only national sporting icon worth his salt

Agree! And the cricketers play for the shirt and not just money! Winning - and in particular beating the Aussies is what matters to them anything else! I really hope they can pull off another famous win!

It's justthe way a game can ebb and flow so much over 5 days! Quite difficult to follow if you have a wife who doesn;t 'get it'! I was at the final day in Cardiff and 4 years ago at Old Trafford and they were probably the best live sport I've ever seen, compelling, tense and exciting all rolled into one, both sides busting a gut to win!

It is a sharp contrast with el Premier Liga with its millions and its playboy millionaires.

Just such a shame that cricket is wedged into such a short space of time between the end of the footy season and then those tedious 'warm up' tournaments...

Well, up to a point. If we are honest the only place where test match cricket appears to be thriving is in England, and occasionally in Australia. Elsewhere, even in cricket-mad India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, attendances at test matches have seriously dwindled over the past 15 years. 'Pyjama' cricket is a financial success and is here to stay, and T20 will gradually become the dominate international game.

True.

I don't really follow other sports so I cannot comment on that. I can say that despite his alcohol induced problems, combined with his injured knee, which has meant that he is retiring from test cricket at the end of this series, he did bowl exceedingly well.

I was amazed to hear we hadn't beaten the Aussie's at Lord's for 75 YEARS! I find that incredible! I am very pleased we finally did.

freddie will go down potentially as the greatest english all rounder, even better than botham

Dont read into the stats and what not. Whenever you have needed a big name player to rise to the occasion almost always freddie is their to get you 5 wickets or 60-70 runs.

If this does indeed once again become freddies ashes then the man should be lauded throughout his retirement as one of if not the greatest player we have ever produced!

Hold on a minute. Flintoff's bowling average is HIGHER than his batting average, scored less centuries and taken less five/ten wicket hauls than Botham.

I suspect though that 'Freddie' could drink Botham under the table.
