Considering the progress already made prior to the landings, and the absolute watertight logistics of a convincing mock-up and cover-up, it probably would've have been just as tricky to fake it as actually do it.

As far as I recall, on one of the later missions they hit a few golf balls off and because of no air and one sixth gravity, the bloody things flew a hell of a distance.
