Why do you need back up software? Just get another external hard disk and copy EVERYTHING to it...

What is the error your getting? Are you using the latest version of Acronis and have you contacted support with the error msg?

I don't trust backup software. I do as rgb says and just copy everything I deem essential to another hard disk(s). Any troubles and I can just reinstall the OS knowing I have my backed-up files safe.

I always used Ghost 2003 and earlier versions until I had a PC with SATA drives and no PS2 ports.

I have used Paragon Drive Backup 9 Pro successfully.
Like Ghost it does not need to be installed, just runs from CD.

My hard drive is partitioned with Windows and Program Files on one partition and all data on the second partition.
I keep copies of important files and a clone of the hard drive partition with OS and applications on DVD's.

With a clone of the OS and applications partition the PC can be up and running again within 30 minutes. OK it will not have latest updates but a good start compared to reloading OS and applications not to mention actually finding CD's and remembering application custom configurations.

The last time I replaced my OS partition was when I has a virus transferred off a mate's USB memory pen.

Hi Rock.

I use Karen's Replicator for backing up all my files.

It works on XP and Vista and it can back up whatever individual folders you choose. When you run it, it saves time by only backing up recently changed or newly created files in those particular folders.

The best thing of all about Karen's Replicator is that it's totally FREE. :)

You'll find it for download at http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp

Very many thanks to everyone! It's a real b*gg*r:

1. Yes - I've put my problem to acronis - but no response

2. Backing up by copying is a damn good idea -but tedious when you add files - that's why an "incremental" back up seems much better

3. I notice some software is effectively "online" - whilst that is good can be costly - and I've been trialling one which relies on logging on to backup - and it's been a disaster!

But I'll get there in the end and am very grateful for everyone's input

Rock
