Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the British goverment has a Scottish PM who we didnt vote for, i wonder which way he will turn on the Lockerbie decision will he support the Scottish Assembly that he played a big part in setting up or wash his hands of it saying it has nothing to do with the British goverment.

Most of us up here can't stand the twat, that's why we let you have him.
Before you ask ---- we don't accept returns without the original receipt and in the original packaging
You don't actually think he will take any responsibility, not with those sloping shoulders of his.

Sam, you ask people to name the last PM the public voted for. Tony Blair is one. I will exclude to mention people who appointed themselves without the public having input, and then won a subsequent election, because people then had no choice but to vote for you or the other person and the public may not like either. Prior to Blair there was Thatcher. I do believe that all senior politicians regard democracy as an inconvenience and wouldn't allow anyone to vote - if they could get away with it. Their mammoth ego's, arrogance, and one huge power-trip, is all they really seem to care about.

Though when you say "give me the name of the last British PM the public did vote for" you may be referring to the fact that we apprently only vote for the party and not for the PM so in that sense the public has NEVER voted for a PM. You pointed this out to me before about how we elect the party and not the leader but I dont think it is proper or fair. The appeal of the leader is something that will make many people vote for the person/party so who leads it is important. Otherwise, as I said on a thread a while ago, a party and its leader may as well take office and then the leader may aswell quit the next day and just anyone take over as leader.

Sam, it is just something topical to chat about. Many people around the world will now be expecting to hear terms like 'The English Government' and 'The English Prime Minister' now that they have heard the term 'The Scottish Government' uttered officially by the American President. I imagine many yanks will be wondering why, in all of this, there is a Scot who is resident in no.10 Downing Street. But then most English people are wondering that too...

Max most Americans think (and I mean truly think) that England is actually Britain so maybe they needed it spelled out to them that it was the Scottish Government and not an English thang ...

PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?

crofter, I remember when I was in New York once - and this genuinely happened. I was chatting to this girl who was serving me in a coffee shop and she said that a friend of hers had been to England, and I asked her "where abouts in England did your friend go?". She replied: "Dublin". That honestly happened, so I get you point about Americans not really knowing the geography of this part of Europe!

To be fair, I'm sure there are many in this country who would be as ignorant of US geography. You only have to see them struggling on Millionaire to decide which state is on the west coast or whatever. And if it comes to that our knowledge of Europe (of which we are part, and I know how much that hurts some on here) is generally pretty rubbish. It flatters our inate ( and usually undeserved) sense of superiority to think of your average American as knowing nothing about anything foreign.
