Will we ever fully recover from Margaret Thatcher?

Apparently several hundred thousand of the jobs that were lost under her reign in the 1980's have still not been replaced. We had the fastest rise in unemployment during her first term (1979-83) than at any time since the Great Depression of the 1920's and by 1983 one in seven people were on the dole. A lot of people in the 80's got used to no work, late mornings, and daytime TV. That is a culture that has stuck with lots of people, whereas previous to that people were used to working 5 days a week and not being Benefit dependant. We are still stuck with, as I say, some of the jobs not replaced and also with a large chunk of the population being used to not being in work. There are something like 6 million people in the UK who are of working age and who are inactive and supported by the State. Will we ever undo what Thatcher did?

I agree that the country was in ruins in the late-70's, 'the poor man of Europe' and 'a basket-case' as it was refered to. I think she went too far the other way though and through de-industrialisation she destroyed many areas of the country and, ironically, it cost the State more to keep all those people on Benefit subsequently than it would have cost to sudsidise the failing industries in those areas which kept people employed. Also, do you remember how she used to lie her way into office then break every promise just after being returned to office? She viewed democracy as an inconvenience, just like her protege John Major did.

Unlike the 'New' Labour Party then? How many promises have they broken? There are more people on benefits now than ever before, and thats after 10 years of economic boom ffs

Sick man of Europe,werent we? well, whatever Thatchers failings, and there were a fair few, at least SHE was pro Britain,and stood up for GK UK best interests , unlike this poor shower .... Didnt labour inherit a pride of Europe economy from the Tories....... if we had a quid for evey time that useless chanceloor used the term "prudence" our kids wouldnt have to worry about THEIR.. Education.. health service..transport..police.... i coulc go on but just thinking about voting them back in after being conned the last time, well it depresses me..
