I keep hearing stories about newspapers and TV networks losing readers and viewers to the internet. I don't think it can all be explained by the variety of content either. The mainstream media is now so restricted in what they can say, they have become useless for real debate.
Compare this forum with virtually anything now on TV as far as free expression goes. Here, as long as you're not openly slanderous or simply offensive for the sake of it, you can say what you think and get it 'off your chest'. If public discussion were left up to big TV and newspapers there would be a lot of people feeling pissed off that their opinion was censored. And when you feel that you're not being heard, it only serves to make you resistant to challenging your own ideas.
Of course, I have never changed any of my views because I'm so fucking pig-headed and stubborn but I bet many of you feel much better after logging onto this site and letting it out rather than steaming away watching a bunch of PC wankers on TV all agreeing with each other about some contentious issue.
PS - I don't want anyone disagreeing with this OK?

Re: Traditional Media and Internet Forums
The reason the mainstream conglomerates are losing readers is their format is out of date
Why would you buy a paper when your already paying for mobile phones/internet access/cable TV which give you access to not only the unsanitised un-distorted news but other impartial commentary which sometimes gives you access to the truth
For us Aussies this site puts the mainstream news outlets to shame
Dont expect I'll be seeing on the mainstream news anytime soon
About the only American news show I've ever seen on TV that was at least trying to be impartial by allowing both sides of the debate a say is below
According to its critics there arent enough guest speakers from the minorities being represented...bollocks to that i say
Sure you can find a forum where you can speak your mind as long as you remain anonymous.

Newspapers are part of the old technology and they are gradually declining in sales. The proprietors obviously realise this so they will literally print anything - especially if the dress it up in a salacious fashion - in order to sell that extra copy of their tawdry rag.

Newshour to me, is the gold standard in how good TV current affairs can be. While our Aussie mainstream shows like ACA and Today Tonight are doing the usual shit about feuding neighbours and miracle diets, Newshour will have a 15 minute interview with Hillary Clinton talking about America's plans for peace. Not much comparisson.

OK Sarah, just for you (you little tease) - I used to be a real leftie, socialist in my late teens/early twenties. These days I tend to cherry pick bits from every political philosophy but I'm mainly conservative with very little sympathy left in me for the main pillars of socialist theory.
That would be my biggest change in thinking. But that's it! No more changing! The Lady's not for turning.

In Manchester city centre, the Evening News is given away free, while in Liverpool the Echo costs 45p. Makes no sense to me.
What is pretty ironic is that homeless people have to SELL the Big Issue, while next to them, PAID people are GIVING AWAY the evening paper.
