They should have known from his movies that you can't just shoot John Wayne and expect him to fall down dead. Fer Chrissake what were they teaching Russian kids in school back then?

What kept the nazis from making/flying/developing more rockets/jet planes/long range rockets to reach america and bombers to bomb america was the lack of fuel and other materials due to germany being attacked on all side by the allies.

In the " Incredible but True" Catagory ,Stalin saw Wayne as the opitime of Western Democracy, and thought assinating such an Iconic figure of free speech and Democracy would be a good idea...plus he didnt like him as he was so against "commies".......... Not sure Russian schoolkids got to see any westerns, which im sure they would have enjoyed enormously..But i do know that with the fall of the berlin wall, you could take a suitecase laden with Abba Lps and old jeans and become a rouble millionaire allmost overnight...!drink!

the germans beat themselves in a sense, its well known that different forces failed to cooperate with each other for the cause and scientists didn't share much knowledge around.goering hated doenitz and vice versa so there was little overlap between luftwaffe and kreigsmarine, hence the idea of long range planes like condor guiding uboats to convoys was never exploited.
but stalingrad was probably biggest setback, they could have got out but hitler made them fight to the end.

"I forget why Hitler attacked Russia. They started off as mates didn't they? Did Russia turn first?"

Germany attacked first, but recently declassified documents have proven what Hitler suspected - that Russia was planning to attack Europe in the new year. By attacking when they did the Germans caught the Russians totally off guard, which is why they had such amazing success in the early months of the war. Winter saved Russia, that and two other things; the German inability to bomb their factories at the same time as supporting the advancing army (limited planes), and the failure of the Japanese to do anything - even token stuff - against the Russians. Hitler's meddling didn't help, but by the time the Germans reached Stalingrad the Russians had recovered from the early defeats and had the measure of the Germans. Also, the US had been in the war for a year at that point, which was putting huge pressure in Africa, the Atlantic, the skies above Europe, and giving Russia a boost in equipment. Germany lost the war in December 1941; as Churchill might've put it, it was the 'end of the beginning'. Stalingrad and Alamein were 'the beginning of the end'.
