Sam, you really are thick, aren't you?
That depends on the company I'm keeping. While in yours I feel like a genius.
What was the first year after 1 BC?
1AD, but so what? That was 2009 years ago. Over half the world celebrated the new millennium at the start of the year 2000 and it has been exactly 10 years, as Max correctly observed, since then this coming New Year. You're not going to get many people accepting the year 1980 as part of the seventies, or someone born in 1960 to say they were born in the 50s.

The original argument was the amount of years since the Millennium celebrations, and in that me and Max are correct in asserting it will be 10 years since then in just under 8 weeks time. If you want to be anal and insist the real millennium started at the beginning of 2001 then that's fine, but that doesn't change the fact that it's 10 years since the actual date most people celebrated the new century.

As a retort I could say that the new millennium should have been on the 14th of January, regardless of year, because of the Julian calendar (reformed), but what of the original? "But we're only talking about the Gregorian calendar!," I hear you cry. Well, ok. But no one actually knows when the Gregorian year 1AD actually was. For instance, Dionysius started the year 1AD a week after Christ's birth, but he calculated Christ's birth incorrectly anyway. The Bible tells us that Jesus was born under the rule of King Herod the Great, who died in 4710 (original Julian calendar, or '4BC' if you prefer). We know that King Herod lived long enough after Jesus' birth because it was he that wanted all male baby infants killed in Bethlehem (remember?). Dionysius calculated John the Baptist's birth to be in the year 4710 because the Bible mentions an eclipse in that year. We know that this is true because we can calculate when eclipses occurred very accurately. Most estimate John being born in February 4709 and not 4710 because the New year then was around the 21st of March and maybe Dionysius took the new year as January the 1st, thus getting the year wrong. The Bible tells us that Jesus was born 20 weeks after John the Baptist's birth, putting Jesus being born in late June to early July.

What's this tell us? Well, that no one can really know the real millennium and so bringing up a lack of a year 0AD isn't much help when you're trying to be pedantic on an internet forum. What we do know for definite is that the whole world celebrated the millennium in the early hours of January 1st, 2000.

Did you not count my little table? The year 2000 was the first year after the millenium celebrations, not 2001. The year 2000 wouldn't count if we had the millennium celebrations at the turn of 2001 like some think we should have, but we didn't and so it's 10 years since those celebrations pretty soon. Max was right.
It was 1 AD, the first year of the first decade - there was NO year zero.
While this maybe true it is obviously a mistake by Dionysius. If the Gregorian calendar was being used at the time of Jesus he would have been born BC.

Even astronomers today actually refer to 1BC as 0 and 2BC as -1.

That should be 'number', not 'amount'.

My (correct) observations were offered in response to the title of the thread.

So. by that analogy, the upcoming decade begins on January 1, 2010 and ends December 31, 2019. So, there are 8.14285714 weeks left in this decade. !thumbsup!

Correct. A consolatory goal for you.

What? The title 'Just 8 weeks left of this decade!'? Well, again, you were wrong. A decade is just a 10 year period and can start at any point. Today is the end of a decade, as tomorrow will be the end of another.

Oh dear....

Yep, that's about it. Some get a bit confused about it all, though!
