Its a gesture of respect.

Those that forget history are in danger of repeating it. I think it is important to remember those that have died just as it's important to remember the criminals like Blair who in the case of the illegal Iraq invasion are in part responsible for soldiers' deaths.

An empty gesture? Personally I dont think so. Why do people go to funerals? The person's dead and unless you are a believer, they aren't going to know one way or another. Again, its about respect - the fact that someone's death does matter to you.

Cheers

You said
"They are so boring. It's not the same as a funeral because you didn't know the people"

I assume that you are talking about yourself rather than looking into a crystal ball re. all the other people who are attending the Remembrance Service. While people might sympathise with your boredom (not much, obviously, if at all, I would guess), there are others who are remembering colleagues, relations who fought, suffered, died etc.

Its very easy, I guess. If you can't be arsed, don't; if you can, do. Its not just the attendance, its the buying of the poppy and/or contribution to the Royal British Legion who seem to do a great job.

It's obvious Reggie's post is just a pathetic attempt to look big / hard and get a nonsense discussion going.

Sad thing is that the two minuets silence is mostly to show respect for those who gave him the freedom to do it.

I agree with paying more tax but I think it's also important to show respect to the fallen. It might also show some of the soldiers who are still fighting and dying that there is some support for THEM if not the cause they are fighting for.
