Banks win case to charge unfair overdraft charges!

Post by jimslip »

Just seen on TV that the banks have won their appeal in the Supreme Court to enable them to make unauthorised, disproportionate charges to customers who become overdrawn on their accounts.

Quel surprise!

Secret is don't get overdrawn!

A bit like the entire financial crisis if people didn't borrow money apart for necessities, like affordable mortgages, they would not be in the brown stuff and those who never have had a credit card wouldn't be either, thanks to them.

Look at it in a different way the industry is quite happy to let things go tits up, not update sites etc and when people justifiably complain that it's not fair then turns on them quoting 'small print' and other excuses, that don't wash.

The banks are just 'quoting small print' and if folk are in the brown stuff because they didn't read it then its their own fault, a bit like the site punters frequently conned.

This is slightly off topic and maybe thought provoking but think about this scenario, the Bank of England is printing money to the tune of Billions and lending it to the banks at a very low interest to try and boost the economy, the banks instead of lending it to industry and other business are instead playing safe and buying goverment gilts and bonds with the money that pay a higher interest rate than what they borrowed it for, this in effect means they are borrowing goverment money and then lending it back to them at a higher rate, this of course is a roundabout way to keep the banks affloat with our money as it will be us who have to foot the bill for this via higher taxes, but the bankers will be the ones collecting the bonuses, Happy Banking !cigar!

If the banks had lost they were going to get their revenge by charging everyone ?2.50 per each ATM cash withdrawal - so it's probably a good thing...

Bandit capitalism

Post by David Johnson »

Yep, this is another example of bandit capitalism, out of control in the UK, which none of the mainstream political parties appear to be doing anything to sort out.

Go 50p overdrawn, okay ?25 bank charge per day.

If you don't pay BT their 3 monthly bill within 10 days of invoice receipt, they prevent you accessing broadband and then stop you phoning anyone apart from the Emergency Services and BT themselves until the bill is paid. They then fine you as a further punishment.

Other companies e.g. public utilities threaten you with visits from credit agencies if you dont pay within similar timescales.

The reason always given is that "it is our terms and conditions" as if Joe Public can negotiate their own Terms and Conditions with the likes of BT.

The vast majority of self-employed people are delighted to get their invoice paid within 28 days.

If Ofgas suggests that the drop in the wholesale price of gas should mean that gas companies should be reducing their price, they basically tell the regulator to get lost and that prices will be going up instead.

Oil is currently selling at approx 75-80$ per barrel. In July last year it was running at about 147$. Okay the majority of the oil price is tax but that does not justifiy the price at the pump being pretty much the same now as when oil was 147$.

The bottom line is that it is the large corporations that run the UK, not the political party that happens to be in power at any particular time.

You said:

"The bottom line is that it is the large corporations that run the UK",

I'd add "and the USA". Also like the oil companies, the energy utilities are running amok, gas prices have tumbled and we're still being screwed, electricity and water, all money spinners, we're just the saps to be screwed!

Personally, I think now that the banks have won the above case, they will now start driving interest rates up on loans and mortgages as they have now consolidated their stranglehold on the British government and tax payer, they can now do anything they want!

Yep, I'd agree with you there.

The bank crisis was a key factor in the recession and yet what are the mainstream parties talking about - cuts in services and Cameron's emergency budget within 50 days of being elected.

The banks should be taxed to pay for this crisis that they played a key part in creating through their incompetence and greed.

I suspect that one of the problems is that the British seem to put up with endless shit. I can't see the French putting up with this bandit capitalism stuff. There were a number of cases in France where they kidnapped the senior management when they attempted to close down factories without adequate consultation/compensation.
