Welkram,
If your brothers went to Public School then they would have been in the Officer Cadet Force, if they so chose because in Public Schools they don't have the Army Cadet Force which is purely for Working Class boys so one's social class is already determined. I was in the British Army and it is almost impossible to rise up through the ranks. All the officers are Hooray Henry's!

Rodders,
Of course there are good and brave officers but name one officer in the British Army who is working class and that is why there is an "officer class" the Upper Class.

Prince Charles has five O levels and I don't know what rank he is but it is all about class and not educational achievements.

The Uk is not a meritocracy or a democracy and it is class that makes it so and those born into a privilege class.

I served with several working class officers. Approximately 50% of REME officers are ex rankers commissioned from Warant Officer.
So, unless you've served, and it rather appears that you aint I would suggest that you stop assuming.

There are many non public school officers in the British Army some have followed the usual path of Sandhurst etc, others have been picked from their regiments and advised to do officer training, those that pass become officers

Anyone can become an officer in the British Army, all you need is

1 A Level
5 GCSE
Then you need to pass your RCB
Followed by passing through Sandhurst

During your time at Sandhurst you interview with different regiments who make you an offer to join on completion of your term.

I feel the lack of working class officers is down to the education system in this country not the class system.

Rodders,

The vast majority of British Officers are Upper Class and that is a fact but there are a few exceptions I must admit. Funny enough the only guy I ever met in the Royal Fusiliers who originated from the working class and had become an officer was attached to the REME, or something like that, and I went to him for advice about the chances of rising through the ranks and he told me "You have got no chance."

Officers had working class batmen who polished their boots and gear and cleaners who cleaned their houses.

On a German course I scored 97 per cent theory and 95 per cent oral language but an officer who scored round about 70 per cent went to Berlin on the interpreter's course.

I think the UK should be a meritocracy and I have always hated the privileged class Lording it over me since I became politically aware. The Officer Class is alive and well have no doubt of it.

Wasn't it foresight not to send you to Berlin because had you been politicised whilst there you may well have made contact with the East Germans and worked covertly for them ? You were a security risk !

!cool!

The Household Brigade is populated with upper class wankers and the only working class commissions are to the RSM once the paerticular battalion has trooped its new colour. The next day the RSM is a Captain. Talk about leapfuckinfroggin!!
Most commissions in the Royal Marines are ordinary to working class blokes with good academics.
Most line Regts have a fair proportion of working class commissions, so, as I have previously said, you have to have served with to meet em. I served and I met em.

Zorro, I stand corrected but things must have certainly changed since I was a young man!
