The word 'Great' in the term 'Great Britain' refers to more than one thing in the one ethos, namely it's refering to the fact it is an amalgam of countries. There are (obviously) three countries and that is what the 'Great' refers to. The word, in this context, is not really used like that now in modern speech but was many years ago. People years ago may have refered to 'the great gathering of politicians in one room', this would not have meant vast numbers of people, nor any reference to them being incredible people, but the fact there were several political parties there or several differnt political ideaoligies in the one place. A 'great debate' would have referred to differnt viewpoints being put in the one debate, and so on. 'Great', years ago, referred to a collection of things in the one entity.

I'm in total agreement with you old boy, I was just being facetious. Although given the shambolic cockwipes currently on watch in the UK, one wonders whether one would be better off in Iraq..

Well Shakespeare made a couple good points, at least about England that is!

This royal throne of kings, this sceptered isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in a silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England,
This nurse, this teeming womb of royal kings,
Feared by their breed and famous by their birth
...

[Richard II, 2.1, 40-51]

Perhaps we could work those words into the lyrics of a new UK National Anthem.
