Brought up on a diet of Coronation Street, bread and jam and socialism, it was with great sadness that I heard that Maggie Jones who played the part of Deidre's mother, Blanche has died.

A brilliant comedic actress, I will leave you with just a few of the blessed Blanche's put-downs

Coronation Street is one of the funniest programmes on TV and Blanche was one of the best actors in it.

I'm sorry to see her go.

Eastenders is the complete opposite to Coronation Street, that's the most depressing programme ever and I can't understand why anyone would want to watch it.

Give me CS with characters like Blanche any day.
