There are plenty of other free security software out there.

For anti virus see Avast or AVG (some versions)

For firewall see ZoneAlarm

For malware see malwarebytes.

These are just examples, there are loads of free (for home use) security products out there.

For mine its not close to being as good as anti-vir for detection rates and quickness of removal

Microsoft Security Essentials, the newly released free antivirus by Microsoft, has a clean and modern interface, with few options to confuse users. The detection rates are very good, in particular the detection of zero-day threats and rootkits. Even more impressive, Security Essentials has very few false positives and is light on resources.

Microsoft Security Essentials is by far the best choice for average users because of the minimal user interaction required. It automatically updates and removes threats. No registration is needed, apart from a quick validating of Windows, and there are no nag screens or advertisements.

The main downsides are the slow scan speeds and the lengthy amount of time it takes to quarantine malware. MSE also is not available in certain countries so users there will have to look elsewhere. Note that Microsoft Security Essentials requires a genuine copy of Windows to install.

I think security essentials is great. Well done Microsoft. 2 years ago they'd have charged for something this good (ok, it's not as good as some retail AVs but still....).

wonder what the catch is?

The online scanners that remove what they find list on the white paper pdf
down the bottom was useful

They always say you should use at least 2 different anti-virus programs
One on permanently and the other as an online scanner

I find it fast and efficient and recommend it. Avira is always trying to sell you more than the free programme!
