Hi Reggie,

Am an ex soldier and have to agree with you a 100% - When the shit hits the fan and the armys expertise is required then (and despite a certain lack of support from the Gov) then the boys in green step in and get the job done - you dont need that kind of bottled up aggression when dealing with pub fights, domestics etc - just before the falklands kicked off , squaddies were in the papers being slated left right and centre for fighting civvies, each other, other forces and all sorts - then almost overnight we finally got to do what we were trained for and suddenly it all changed in the papers

Military personnel are trained to think when they have a rifle in their hands - it takes a long time and is beaten into you that it can kill if not made safe - yes their have been accidents over the years but not many. Unless you decide to join the Police as (and please correct me if i'm wrong) a 'Blue Beret' i think they were called back in the day - then your average copper (UK) shouldn't be anywhere near a firearm. It is a different way of thinking and dealing with aggressive situations - however on the whole the police dont spend all thier time dealing with people in a kill or be killed situation.

Loved the comment about security work , as I applied to join the MET when I left the Army and was not even interviewed, and although moved on many times since - my first job was security !grin!

Mind you the reason given was ' As you can appreciate, some careers require a higher level of fitness than others' I still piss myself laughing when I think of some of the coppers I used to know being portrayed as fitter than your average squaddie............

I hope you were not serious when you say he should have 'blasted a few of them to bits', thats not even funny.

Have you ever had a cop pull a gun on you? My first time was about 15 years ago in New Mexico. I was on a pretty minor road going about 10 mph over the limit, a police cruiser came up behind me and flashed me. As I have always done in the UK (and still do) I pulled over got out of my car and walked back to where the cruiser had stopped, the front doors opened and from behind the doors one officer pointed a 12 gauge pump action shotgun and the other officer 0.357 Colt Diamondback. I finished up spread out beside the road, I was handcuffed, kicked, slapped around, arrested and the following day was fined $150. I accept that my crime was speeding but after complaining about my treatment I was told I only had myself to blame as I had been too cocky and disrespectfull and I had no right of appeal. Both of these officers received weapons training but had never been called upon to use the guns in anger, they thought I was a threat to them and went hyper, which according to their Captain was my fault for getting out of my car.

Any policeman who pushes over a demonstrator, or hits an objector with his truncheon or pulls a gun on snowballers must be made to answer.

You really do spout a load of shyte.
Just because some one served as a soldier does not mean he can't be trained in another job for fucks sake.
What you are saying is, that after how many years service, the soldier is good for fuck all else other than soldiering.
Some of the best coppers are ex soldiers. It just happens that all of the armed officers who have been involved in negligent discharges are not ex soldiers.
It's a good job we aren't all pricks like you.

Spanner, I guess you are ex REME. "We'll make your nuts tighten" was an expression I used to a gorgeous waitress in Washington when on my way to Canada in 1980. Great to see it still used.
I am ex REME and I have a very well paid and extremely interesting job. I considered the Gendarmes briefly during the first firemans strike and decided that I had a better future in the Corps.
Since leaving I have worked mainly in the automotive industry in design and development, a far cry from spannering all over the world in fucking awful conditions I can say.
Some squaddies are only fit for menial work, and I would suggest that if you applied to the Met then whatever you wrote didn't ring their bell.
My son applied to Wrexham cops a few years ago, but, he is English, and though they will not admit it will only recruit Welsh or Welsh speakers. He reinlisted and is well on the way to Warrant rank and an eventual commission.
I still maintain that some of the best cops are ex service and I know several who are.

Hi Rodders - Good guess sir but half a cigar only i'm afraid (Rag and oil company ) RAOC - so very very close though !grin!

At least you didnt bite my head off - which lately has been a bit of a regular trend on these forums for having an opinion or placing an addition to a thread , so for that i thank you.!bow!

As you well know, the forces has pretty much every trade under the sun, but whatever the 'day job' was , you must remember this saying 'Soldier first, tradesman second' lol. - So in the spirit of debate and the continuing season of goodwill etc , I will ammend my earlier statement and say that perhaps 'some' soldiers dont make good coppers(gung ho types)and it would be so horribly wrong to arm them as well - but perhaps some do (MP's as an example) a little bit more discerning - Would be extremely interesting perhaps to reverse it slightly and ask the question ....do ex coppers make good soldiers??? can imagine the scene 'excuse me sir, is this your tank?' or ' i was proceeding on my way to the war, when i noticed the CO's tax disc had expired ' !laugh!

No it doesn't.
You did say that soldiers would not make good police officers because of the institutionalisation they undergo. Twaddle.
Well, I served 22 years and I am NOT institutionalised.
I did not find it difficult to adjust to civillian life on retirement.
I found it difficult to get a job as there were more applicants for jobs than jobs. No I did not sit on my arse and hold my hand out. I lived on my pension for a while and my wife worked. I was offered jobs but as soon as employers found out I had a pension all of a sudden 2K was knocked off the salary. That told me that they weremn't worth working for.
I did find employment, all on my ownsome. The Job Centre was worse than useless. They are only good for unskilled workers as those who advertise there only want unskilled so they can be paid a pittance.
As for Skodas, they are pretty good now that VW took them over and they are constructed by skilled workers. So that jibe shows your ignorance.
I don't take fucking shit that harms my body. Yes, I enlisted because I wanted to shoot someone. Someone who would be an enemy to my country. I see nothing wrong in that.
Obviously your knowledge of soldiers is minimal as is your knowledge of the Police service. You are generalising I believe.
I withdraw my remark in calling you a prick. You are a still.

Cheers spanner.
Rag and Oil, brings back happy memories. Some of the best drinking buddies I had were from various stores sections I served with in Borneo, Singapore, Germany, Canada and UK. Both cap badges upheld the honour of the Corps in various bars.
Actually one of the best craftsmen I had in my platoon was an ex copper. He went on to be a tiffy and last I heard was an ASM.
Merry Crimbo mate.
