I am an medical/scientific instrument maker and use a lot of measuring instruments everyday. I would say that some of the Chinese stuff is nearing the best from the west, but a lot of it is pretty junky.

Mitutoyo was having a lot of their stuff made in China just like the big Jap electronics companies like Sony, Panasonic, Sharp etc get most of their products made in China. However, the chinese made Mitutoyo instruments just weren't up to scratch. A Mitutoyo vernier height gauge I got a few years ago was a disappointment - distinctly lower quality than a Japanese made one from about 15 years ago. One of the local distributors here in Oz told me Mitutoyo has gone back to making more of their stuff in Japan until the Chinese factories get better.

And the U.S. company Starrett used to make the most beautiful range of hand tools and measuring instruments in the USA. Alas, it's almost all made in fucking China now and the quality has dropped off (but not the price of course!).

And that once great British company Moore and Wright I'm sure get all their stuff made in Asia. Beats me why they cant make it in the UK with modern CNC machines and labour costs become almost irrelevant.

Laughing my arse off! The term 'mic' could mean microphone (as used by Reg) or micrometer (as used by RoddersUK). Shure make microphones.

Ever since I got up to speed about their treatment of many minority groups within China and the farce that is Tibet i simply source stuff from anywhere else if possible but it gets harder and harder as they flex their financial muscle

They all but killed African manufacturing in one flex of that financial muscle

The stupidity of the situation is people want cheap good quality products but also want good secure long term jobs.....................You cant have both

Time a few people woke up to what buying the cheap imported products is really doing besides saving them a few dollars/pounds etc

Buy local if you can afford it

I'd say it would count as (2) products. But I was just looking through our collection of sex toys and found they were ALL made in China, particularly worrying was one big dildo with a sign saying "Made and TESTED in China!" !grin!

I bought a range of Moore & Wright measuring instruments from a retired toolmaker several years ago, just before his move to Portugal. They are superb well made quality instruments and I would say before the days of sourcing in Asia.
