Warms the heart for us jaded old cynics

In a world gone to shit where no one can be trusted. In new York City...Hope. Humanity and kindness exists.

Gosh that sounds like a narrative for a movie trailer.

I once returned someones wage packet I found in the street. Didn't think twice about it. A fiver, yep, straight in my pocket, but a whole weeks wages, thats someone feeding their kids.

I once changed a wheel for two nuns, too. I have no religious beliefs whatsoever, but I did feel good for the rest of the day!
We have need of you again, great king.

A long long time ago (but still this galaxy) whilst working in the 'city' of london (security guards...)- my self and a friend of mine once found a Bank couriers despatch bag and inside was several Million pounds worth of bonds (the type you could pay into your bank and they wouldnt bat an eyelid and your balance would just go up extremely high!!!!!) my mate wanted to keep them, but I convinced him we would do all right out the reward - we were given a cheap bottle of plonk each !laugh! think he still hates me nearly 20+ years later.....................

Ha ha...Hence the jaded cynic in me Planet.

The crazy thing is I would have probably done the same as that cab driver. if I didnt find the people then i would have kept it. Handing it in would be foolish because I reckon someone would have pinched it anyway.

Its things like this that makes me feel warm inside knowing there are people out there who still care.

Reminds me of a story.

September 1987 I was stuck in New York with very little money, details of how and why are not important to this story. Early morning I was given a flight ticket back to London but it meant that I had to stay in NYC all that day and night and also the following day, the flight went out of Newark at 8.30pm the following evening.

Spent some of the little cash I had on a real shitty room in a real shitty hotel north of 42ns St on 8th Ave, room was cheap due to the place being the home/work place of dozens of pretty cheap whores - male and female.

However most of my time was spent roaming the streets and soaking up the sun, the scene and the sites. Never once did I feel threatened or unsafe as I remembered and used an old saying of Billy Connolly's, "to stay safe on the street you should always look like a mugger and never like a muggie". I didn't slink around or look furtive, I walked along 42nd St and Times Sq as if I owned the place. If I needed to stop and look around I just leaned in the doorway of a porno theatre or a titty bar and stared at people untill they looked away.

The ironic part of this story is that when I got back to the UK I had to take a train and bus to get home, and on the bus I finished up in a slap around with a couple of young lads and their girl friends who thought it fun to be obscene and swear very loudly on a bus half filled with old ladies coming back home with their afternoon shopping.

Moral is, safe in NYC with all the meth and crack soaked headbangers, but you get the skin knocked of your knuckles by some snotty shell suited oiks. (we didn't have hoodies then).
