He comes from a generation of Labour people who really seemed to care, they just had a problem with coming up with effective policies that would mean their ideals could be workably implemented. I always admired the likes of him, Dennis Healy, Barbara Castle and so on. Foot was not someone who demanded to be seen on TV and in print all the time in later years either, unlike Tony Benn for example - Foot was more modest. His commitment to full employment, one of his biggest principals, was something that was sadly lacking by the Tories in the 1980s. I am not saying he would have made a good PM but his heart was in the right place. He lived to be 96 which is a very long innings. RIP Michael Foot.

Sorry I thought he died years ago !

Whats the betting the likes of Blair will be talking tearfully, attending the service etc. and then off to count his millions....

PS still no answer to question "will Blair become the first former PM to be a tax exile... under his own party"?

Blair probably will become the first ex PM to become a tax exile. New Labour brought us many new things - like the Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward being the first Labour MP to have a butler. Woodward also owns at least 7 houses, one is a multi-million pound pad in The Hamptons outside New York. He still claimed for the mortgage on one of his London properties though.

A great man, selfless parliamentarian and a scholar. And NOT a PR man in disguise as a politician.

Principles and politician, not words often seen in the same sentence (at least when spoken truthfully)
