Max, only rarely is a fatwa issued as a "death sentence". There are various types of fatwa, see here for example (okay it's wiki, but it explains it quite well):
From what I've read, this bloke isn't calling for "death to the suicide bombers" at all - merely warning them that they'll "burn in Hell" if they choose to go down that route because it's "unislamic" (something along those lines).

Fatwa does NOT mean a death sentence. It means an "edict".

In what way is this a turnaround? Other Muslim clerics (both in the UK and elsewhere) have issued similar fatwas

Some younger, more gullible male Muslims will not take any notice... indeed they may even use this fatwa as an example of how older, more westernised Muslims have lost their way and argue that the terrorist war on the west must be redoubled to avoid even more Muslims being ensnared by western culture

If anybody thinks that those bastards will take note, fergit it. The bastards are just like the I R fucking A. They kill because they like it. In no way are they standing up for the defence of Islam, and if this cleric thinks otherwise he's as fucking stupid as they are.

Eric, if he gets a lot of support and is regularly featured in the media, then it will show to at least some young impressionable muslims that there is another way other than violence. Of course many young muslims grow up to not have that view of things but some do and maybe if this guy gets well known and respected then a few less will consider the violent path. Time will tell.

Re: Fatwa to be issued AGAINST suicide bombers...
Bob, I think this is a turnaround as many muslims who were not even in favour of militancy in the name of their religion often would comment with an 'if, but and a maybe' as part of their 'condemnation' of it. There was very rarely absolute condemnation from even the moderates, you would hear 'this is wrong but I understand why they did it' kind of view. Total and utter comdemnation of it, like this guy does, is almost a new thing from the community.
