In politics the only law is expediency therefore if you have principles you'll tend to be 'useless'.

I see little evidence for the insult of "useless" politician.

He held the Labour party together at a time when there was a breakaway to set-up the SDLP. He had a

He lost an election in 1983 but that in my book does not equate to being "useless".

It did to the rest of his Party, he would never have made a good PM, he wasn't hard faced enough, he was however very Intelligent, articulate and extremely funny..RIP M Foot.

Had more integrity, honesty and decency than any of the odious little cunts in Labour today.
One of the last of a bygone generation of Labour that used to mean something to the working man.

I watched the programme on BBC2 a couple of hours ago. It was quite touching in parts, you could see he really cared, he just made a few mistakes along the way. One thing that made me laugh was when he said (this interview was filmed in 1997, so 12 or more years after his less than sucessful time as Labour leader): "Nobody who joined the Labour Party when I was leader can be accused of being a careerist!". I would have to agree, lol.
