Cop killer released - thought to be first ever...

This man is back on the streets after 36 years in jail. What do people think about this? It is thought he is the first murderer of a Police officer to be released from jail, and it looks like he was in touch with his underworld pals straight away. If you read this article you will see he made 5 phone calls from 5 differnt phone boxes one after the other - why would someone do that unless that are worried about the authorities listening in to the calls? I personally think it is appalling someone like this has been let out, he should have died in prison. He not only murdered one Policeman, he shot another one aswell:

The only surprise is that he actually got 36 years in the first place. These days he'd probably have got 2 life sentences, but with payrole, early release scheme. extra time off for good behaviour,care for distraught prisoner scheme etc etc, he could look forward to sunning himself in Barbados (Early release 5 star holiday get over the trauma of prison scheme) after about 5 years!

Max... why is it that you think someone who killed a policeman should be treated differently (in this case I presume more harshly) than someone who killed an "ordinary" citizen? What's so special about the killing of a policeman that deserves a longer sentence?

What concerns me, if we are to believe The Sun, is that he has been released whilst still showing signs of a severe personality disorder, not the fact that a "cop killer" has been released per se.

Regarding the phone calls... did you actually read what The Sun wrote? "... and went into four phone boxes before making a long call from a fifth." Where does it say he made FIVE calls from each of those different phone boxes? Did it ever cross your mind that in the first four phone boxes he never made a call because the phone was out of order, or only took debit/credit cards (something a recently released prisoner wouldn't have)?

Not only do you seem to rely on very dubious sources of information, but you jump to your own conclusions based only on the sad, misguided fantasies that whirl around in what you mistake for your brain!

That I can understand... but why does such a seemingly large proportion of the public, and the right-wing gutter press like The Sun and The Daily Mail, think that a policeman's life is worth more than yours or mine?

Perhaps it's in the nature of homicide?

The average murder where the average person kills some other average person isn't seen as very coldblooded in that sense of things. Someone gets drunk, someone gets killed, that's about it. While I'm certainly not trying to illustrate some point one life is worth more than another, killing a police officer requires some premeditation and malicious activities to begin with.

Also, soldiers and police officers are subject to certain urban romanticism, based on the "fact" they're risking their lives to protect your life (whatever your opinion on certain wars and laws might be).

The authorities take the murder of anyone very seriously, many murder investigations cost millions of pounds to complete and that money is always found to cover the thing. When a person is murdered, which sadly happens every day, it only sometimes makes the news. When a Police officer is murdered it is usually the top story. I think the reason for this, as has been touched upon, is because Police officers put their lives on the line for the public so when they die in the line of duty the coverage, and the fact it is more of a big deal, is because of that.
