Politics is about compromise

The perfect example of that is when THE PARTY allows their 'bought' members
to vote with their conscience as opposed to the towing the party line which means possibly going against your own ideas, ethics & morals

I'd think the ratio is about 1/2 conscience votes to every 98/99 party votes

They dont call politics dirty for no reason

I agree OEJ. I'm sure that the vast majority of them start out in politics for the "right" reasons.

But there are two problems:

1) Many of them have little or no "real world" experience. They come straight out of University armed with degrees in political science, law or some such - upon which they promptly take up residence in ivory towers or get jobs as parliamentary researchers or something along those lines. Not all of them are like that obviously, but these days many (too many) are, and have never spent time at the coal face (literally or metaphrically) as was the case in days of yore. And the number of the current crop who have served in the armed forces you can probably count on the fingers of one hand. The only ones who spring immediately to mind are Eric Joyce and old Paddy Pantsdown.

2) We all know the old saying that power corrupts and that absolute power corrupts absolutely. And there's a lot of truth in that. Because the higher up the political ladder they climb, the more detached from the hoi polloi (that's us lot) they become, the more cosseted they are by the perks of being parliamentarians (as evidenced by the expenses scandal, which still hasn't gone away) and the more seduced they become by the trappings of power. Once that happens, it's not something they're going to give up lightly, and so they resort to whatever means necessary to hold onto it - including lying through their teeth if needs be. Certainly they have no problem simply telling the electorate what they know it wants to hear when elections are looming (schools blah blah police blah blah hospitals blah blah less immigration blah blah fairness blah blah) - then doing whatever the fuck they feel like doing afterwards, and sod the manifesto (which of course isn't legally binding).
