If you think about it Cameron has done very badly to not win this Election outright. After 13 years of Labour, and with Labour having been quite unpopular for years, he should have won very comprehensively - but instead just achieved the title of 'largest single party' for the Conservatives.
The Conservative Party, right up until John Major's time as leader, were probably the most sucessful politcal party on earth. They had never (I think) been out of office for more than one term at a time and had won most of the Elections they had ever fought.
Also, do you remember when Cameron became leader a lot was made of his past as a druggie? Many people said that as a young man Cameron enjoyed snorting lots of white powder and smoked lots of spliffs. He refused to comment on the allegations. I am amazed no one brought this up during the recent Election campaign.
So Dave hasn't really suceeded, but one advantage of that is his 'mini-me', George Osbourne, is less likely to just automatically become PM within the next 10 years - so thank god for that. It does look likely though that within a few days Gordon The Ego will be gone and Cameron and Clegg will be running the nation.
David Cameron - a failed politican..

Max the Tories bought the media long ago. There was more chance of Elvis in Downing Street as there was of seeing a negative media campaign on Green Dave during the election.

I agree, I dont think he ever fully won over the traditional Tory voter.
However he did get a huge swing from Labour to Tory (but that may have happened anyway, with any Tory leader in charge, as Labour were so unpopular).
Even though I am generally a Tory supporter I think there is still a lot of anti-Thatcher feeling amongst many voters.
This polarised many voters to vote labour to keep the Tories out.

As a follow on from my comment above, our voting system does throw up some strange results that dont always tell the full story.
In the 2001 election Labour got 413 seats, Tories 166, so a total whitewash.
But in the same election Labour got 40.7% of the vote, Tories 31.7%, so big gap, but not such a whitewash.
In 2005 Labour got 356 seats, Tories 198, so still a landslide.
But in the same election Labour got 35.3% of the vote, and Tories got 32.3%, so almost nothing in it.
But in this 2010 election Tories got 36.1% of the vote (more than Blair last time) but only won 305 seats (less than Blair last time).
Labour only got 29% of the vote (less than Tories last time), but got 258 seats (more than Tories last time).
Strange eh !

Hi Max
"If you think about it Cameron has done very badly to not win this Election outright. After 13 years of Labour, and with Labour having been quite unpopular for years, he should have won very comprehensively - but instead just achieved the title of 'largest single party' for the Conservatives"
To paraphrase the great Gordon Brown. I agree with Max.
If Cameron can't get an overall majority in this perfect storm for Labour (worst global recession since the 30's, disaster in Iraq, unpopular war in Afghanistan, 90% of the press against the Labour party, 13 years in power and only twice in 200 years has a party won 4 elections on the trot, unpopular PM etc etc) you would be hard pushed to think of a situation in which Cameron would get an overall majority.
Maybe if there is a Lib/Lab pact and loads of extremely unpopular measures get introduced, then this could possibly happen. It's definitely a good election not to win in some ways.
Cheers
