Good to see the new Government is Squeaky clean
Re: David Laws
A Liberal in a gay sex scandal. Who saw that one coming? At least this time no dogs died.
Re: David Laws
He should resign or be sacked.
He is well aware of the rules, has been having an affair for nine years with this guy, is a member of the most progressive and gay friendly party we've got in this country, yet expects us to believe that he fiddled his expenses out of fear and didn't consider someone he was fucking for nine years to be a spouse because they had a separate social life? Fuck off, Laws.
He was clearly taking advantage of lax rules with his rent and living expenses and it's notable that his inflated utility and maintenance claims soon dropped, by around two thirds, as soon as receipts had to be provided.
Nice an convenient that the huge sums he was paying his partner must have helped the guy to be able to sell his former home at profit and buy a nice new one.
All on the taxpayer.
If he doesn't leave his job, either by jumping or being pushed, this government, which is already on very shaky ground, will have no credibility at all.

Just another "bent" MP and you can take that any way you like.
Re: David Laws
Whats sickens me is there appears no one questioning his motives for this at all. All it appears he had to do is say "i did because im a bender and didnt wnat anyone to know", considering his a millionare and didnt even need the expences for the rent money so why then steal form the public purse and give it to his mate if he wanted it on the hush hush.
And how can he justify not being able to work out living with someone and bumming them didnt count as a partner?

Re: David Laws
First I think there are many, many MPs in all parties who don't take the piss with regard to expenses. And when this stuff emerges, it gives the impression that they are all on the take which is a bit sad.
For me what is interesting about this is the sheer hypocrisy of the Lib Dems on this. I recall the Blessed Cleggie going on endlessly in the TV election debates about how clean his party were compared to the other parties when it came to expenses. And how he was going to clean up the whole of the House of Commons as part of the new politics as opposed to the old politics of Tories and Labour.
So here we are, 18 days in and Laws has trousered ?40K. He accepts he has done wrong and resigned. The reason he gives is that he wanted to protect his sexual orientation.
Look if it was that important to him, an obvious option is available for MILLIONAIRE banker, Laws. Don't claim it or come up with an alternative arrangement. It was the same Laws who berated the Tory candidates in his area for being not as clean as him.
Cleggie has had the charge of hypocrisy thrown at him with regard to his second home in Brussels whilst he worked for the EU. He trousered a six figure sum for living expenses and local travel and refused to explain whether this money was spent on paying for his second home in Brussels. He has refused to explain what the money was spent on. The reason he can get away with this, unlike Laws, is that no receipts are required for EU living expenses. It is a day rate paid for turning up.
What is without question is that Cleggie made a huge profit of over 300,000 euros on the sale of his second home. His failure to explain what the living expenses obtained for Brussels accommodation were actually spent on, leaves the inevitable questions unanswered. Did he use it to pay off his mortgage at the taxpayers' expense, something he slagged off Westminster MPs for doing?
Cheers

Re: David Laws
Nick Clegg needs to get back in his fucking box, frankly. He swans about like he owns the country and someone needs to give him a slap and remind him he had a disastrous election and his is firmly the third party in UK politics.
I wonder if the Tories are hoping all this will collapse within the year anyway. They've appeared to give the Lib Dems some concessions but the important ones (to the LDs) are deferred by a year (the ?10000 tax threshold and referendum on AV) and we're now seeing some fudging on the capital gains tax issue.
If the coalition falls to bits quickly and we have another election, the Tories won't have to deal with their more uncomfortable concessions at all.
Danny Alexander in such a high profile job, with just five years as an MP and no City background at all, is a huge mistake. He was Danny Who? in his own household a month ago.
