I live in Hove, in sight of the sea, which is a bloody lot further sarf than Preston. I was given a Jock fiver in change a couple of weeks ago and
I had no problem changing it in my local watering hole, nor have I had problems in the shops at other times. Must be some more enlightened people down here in sunny Sussex than up norf london.

Last week I spend a Scottish tenner at a Tesco in Canterbury, no problem.

I once (in the 1990s) tried to exchange Scottish notes on a trip to Poland, that was a headache - apparently only the National Bank in Warsaw would accept them there.

There is a practical problem, and that's the issue of recognising whether it's genuine or fake. This is harder with Scottish money, because (i) in England you get to see the notes less often; (ii) there is more of it, because there are notes issued by Bank of Scotland, RBS, Clydesdale Bank, and who knows who else; (iii) to make matters worse the look of these notes changes pretty frequently.
